A Newsweek survey reports that 3 out of 4 “Gen Z” employees believe we should be working less than 6 hours per day in a 4 day work-week, in comparison to the current standard of 8 hours per day in a 5-day work week. Tim Ferriss took it a step further with his 2007 book “The 4-Hour Workweek”, which spent 4 weeks on various bestseller lists and sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

I read this book this past summer, and it had a profound impact on my outlook on life and work. Ferriss covers how he used company automation and intentional lifestyle design to win his life back, going from 14-hour high-stress days to 4 hours of work per week, all with increased outcomes for his companies. As much as I loved his book, the life he described and some of his action items felt unattainable to someone like me who lives a very structured “big corporation” life. Thankfully it’s now 2023, and AI can make this dream life accessible to everyone.

But despite the allure of tailored workouts at a tap, AI-designed plans aren't without their limitations. Ranging from potential inaccuracies to straight up harmful information, it's important to navigate this space with an understanding of both the benefits and the pitfalls.

In this article, rather than presenting AI as the ultimate solution for creating foolproof workout plans, we'll explore it as a tool that can provide us with personalized suggestions and ideas. It's about supplementing, not replacing human intuition and expertise.

Unpacking AI in Fitness: Promise, Pitfalls, and Personalization

It’s no question that the world is delving deeper into a state of extensive globalization. Apart from the increased prominence of trade, diplomacy, and our world’s interconnected global economy, the twenty-first century seems to be the period in which cross-cultural exchange is starting to flourish at an unprecedented level. As the United States populace begins to show greater interest in other countries, there is a natural tendency for more people to engage with different languages. There is one complication with this, however.

Many of the languages popular with younger generations, such as Japanese and Korean, are not typically taught in the standard U.S. curriculum. Yet that doesn’t seem to stop language learners from pursuing their language of interest. In fact, according to a survey conducted by 

, only 31% of people who study foreign languages are forced to for educational purposes. The remaining 69% do it for independent growth or personal interest. It seems, then, that there is a large need for good language learning resources outside of the classroom. Tutors and paid educational or cultural organizations may provide high quality, attractive alternatives, but the reality of life is that many people do not have the financial resources or time to engage with languages in such a way. A much cheaper substitute is online resources: this means YouTube videos, articles, and online forums. However, internet videos and articles are rarely — if ever — truly incorporate interactiveness (an essential part of learning a new language), and online forums can be a tedious and inefficient means of learning a language — one where the student has little control over. But with recent innovations in the field of machine learning, there is now an effective, customizable guide perfectly tuned for the task of teaching new languages: AI chatbots.

By now, ChatGPT and other generative AI chatbots are household names. The basic idea is that the user can input a question, statement, or any type of text input, and the chatbot will output a response. It’s a fairly simple concept but highly effective when it comes to learning in an interactive and engaging way. Firstly, chatbots like ChatGPT do not just generate random replies. Before being released into the internet, these AI models were fed millions of input data — text scraped from all over the internet — from which they learned patterns and connections between different concepts. This means that generative AI models can recognize the user’s intention to an impressive degree and can identify the most statistically likely answer to the question. As a result, these chatbots are highly interactive and customizable based on the user’s inputs, or prompts. In addition, the data fed into these chatbots comprise high quality research and books, resources that the AI is able to keep in mind while generating responses. Therefore, responses are not only highly specialized towards whatever question users input, but they are also highly educated and reflect a strong understanding of the subject. The only caveat is that AI tools like ChatGPT 3 were created before 2023, and as such, the data they were trained on could be out of date. Regardless, the vast majority of information is still relevant, and as such, these chatbots still serve as amazing tools to use for language learning. Let’s see how this would work practically.

Turning Workouts into Adventure with AI

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is booming. Within less than a year, Generative Pre-training Transformers (GPT) have evolved from a research subject relatively unknown by the wider public to household names in communities all over the world. This might partially be due to the fact that the capabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning have increased exponentially since the advent of a new AI model called the transformer, and more so in 2017, when researchers introduced the notion of capturing relationships between words in an input sentence (known as “self-attention”). However, one potentially greater reason for AI’s popularity is that with the focus on natural language processing, AI tools have become extremely useful to almost anyone — not just researchers.

ChatGPT and other generative AI-powered chatbots are the harbingers of this “natural language processing revolution.” Their ability to parse and comprehend input text at such an efficient pace lends itself to almost every field and every corner of daily life. One application in particular is the use of generative AI in the classroom, specifically language classrooms. The main purpose of world language classes is to promote the ability to parse through texts of different languages, so it’s only natural that generative AI could help. At the same time, there are a multitude of other ways in which AI can aid in communication — some which are unique to language classrooms and others which can apply to any educational or interpersonal setting.

Helping communicate topics of study to students is one of the more general usages of AI. In fact, for any subject that includes complex concepts, communication aid can be vital on the part of the teacher. One good way of conveying these ideas is through analogies, since they can offer a visualization for something that’s otherwise hard to grapple with. Since generative AI gathers and learns from basically all the information on the internet, it has the capability to be highly customizable to the user’s needs, and as such, can act as an analogy generator. In fact, an example analogy generation prompt can be found 

 (note that if you use the prompt for foreign language concepts, you will need to specify the language in the “concept” field).  Additionally, an example input and output can be seen below. This example was taken from ChatGPT since as of the time of this article, it is the leading generative AI tool.
